What's a 'Cinemag'?
A Cinemag is unique to the Phantom HD: it is a big block of memory which attaches to the top of the camera body. If shooting at less than 450fps, one can save footage directly into the Cinemag (by-passing the camera's internal memory) so you can shoot very long takes. Above 450fps, one shoots in the usual way into the camera memory and then copy the footage across from camera to Cinemag in a matter of seconds. So virtually no download time on set! Of course, one still needs to copy footage from the Cinemag later, but usually after the shooting clock has stopped ticking. In addition, one can review shots stored in the Cinemag, so instead of using a separate composite video playback system & operator, one can review earlier takes in glorious HD without the additional cost of video playback. Possibly even better, one can choose the best of the takes for saving later, rather than time-consumingly saving most takes. You know it makes sense.
Look at it another way:
Shoot high speed on a Photosonic film camera, and a typical take using 1000ft magazine of 35mm film would cost £1000 in stock and telecine alone, before you've even put it through steadygate to sort out the film weave (the images recorded on HSV are steady as a rock). A high speed video shoot day with Pirate can yield 50 or more takes - imagine how much that would cost if shot on film!
